The Biocity Studio is a research group dedicated to the development and free publication of urban sustainability resources. Environmental performance metrics for nations and cities is accessible via the data visualiser tool.

The data visualiser is linked to a wiki displaying information entered by the growing biocity global community and other strategic partners. Visitors to the site can create custom graphs to compare the environmental metrics of up to ten cities or countries against one another across twelve major urban systems.

Cities house around 50% of the world’s population and are responsible for nearly 80% of global green house emissions yet they only occupy about 2% of the world’s surface. With the converging challenges of oil depletion and global warming upon us cities need to move rapidly beyond outmoded fossil fuel based planning. By adopting new green infrastructure practices and embracing clean technologies they can remain livable and competitive. Green cities that nurture their human and environmental capital will be best positioned to meet the challenges of the future. Rapid global change is best driven through collective local action. Read More

What a great vision that could be used here in Dee Why by Mayor Michael Regan! With so many influential sustainability experts living and working in the Manly Warringah area, why are we not able to make Dee Why Australia's first sustainable city with respectful connections between accommodation, transport, health/ sporting areas, food sources, energy creation, waste utilisation, lifestyle access, and lots more. Humans seem to make the wrong choices compared to nature where evolution allows free competition to chose the best solution with least impact. more »

Great idea Elle I am going to do the same. Openly displaying our city metrics for all to see means that we can actually compare how our towns are going relative to each other. I want to show the local Council how badly we are doing on our water use compared to others and get them to start dealing seriously with our lack of water. As climate change decreases our rainfall we are in real trouble here unless we start recycling our waste water. more »

I can see how biocity could be a great resource for transition towns groups to upload the data on their town each year and then track progress through the graphing tool. I am going to have my group check it out and get registered. more »
